HOW CAN CHOLERA BE PREVENTED

  • Treat water before use
  • Wash your hands with treated water before touching food
  • Wash fruit, vegetables, utensils, clothing and bedding in treated water before use
  • Build and use a toilet
  • Ensure the toilet is far away from the river or stream that is used for cooking and washing
  • Wash your hands with treated water after using the toilet
  • Keep the toilet clean

HOW CAN DRINKING WATER SOURCES BE PROTECTED

  • Sewage treatment plants must be operated effectively
  • Prevent untreated human excrement from reaching the water sources
  • Drinking water must be properly disinfected (chlorinated) before use

WHO MUST BE INFORMED

Notify officials from the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF) or the Department of Health (DOH)  immediately to enable them to protect water sources
